Welcome to the College Aerospace Medicine Society at The Univsersity of Virginia
CAMS is an organization comprised of undergraduate students at the University that fosters interest in the field of aerospace medicine. It is one of the only undergraduate aerospace medicine clubs in the country. Through a Activities club, speaker series events, hands-on activities, and community outreach, students will explore this ever-growing field.
Aerospace medicine is the unique study of medicine in aerospace enviornments. Acording to the Aerospace Medical Society, Aerospace medicine focuses on the clinical care, research, and operational support of the health, safety, and performance of crewmembers and passengers of air and space vehicles, together with the support personnel who assist operation of such vehicles. The environments of space and aviation provide significant challenges, such as microgravity, radiation exposure, G-forces, emergency ejection injuries, and hypoxic conditions, for those embarking in their exploration. Neither primary care nor surgical specialties address these issues with the depth needed to manage the health care of military and civilian aviators and space explorers.
Join our ListservTo expose our members to the vast field of aerospace medicine, a wide range of hands-on activities are performed, these range from analyzing the optimal cabin layout for best mobility to investigating the types of diets air and space passengers must consume to stay healthy.
A key component of CAMS is the journal, The Cockpit. This journal gives members the oppurtunity to write articles pertaining to the field of aerospace medicine which would be published to both UVA and the greater aerospace medicine community. Every two weeks, society meetings center around members picking an article to read and discuss to better broaden their knowledge of the field.
As this is an organization centered primarily on learning about the subject of aerospace medicine, a myriad of guest speakers present topics of this field and explain their experiences. These speakers can include officials from NASA, aerospace medicine physicians, and engineers from aerospace companies.
As a way to give back to the community, service oppurtunities are an intetral component of the organization. Aerospace related community service activties include creating care packages to be flown to less-developed countries.
